There may be times, in the lives of even the most resilient people, when the negative effects of events, relationships, or feelings can threaten to become overwhelming. Sometimes friends or family cannot offer us the help we need, if there is a worry that sharing our feelings would be too upsetting for them or shaming for us. In these situations, a trained and independent therapist can provide the necessary support for us to explore and address difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours, without embarrassment or judgement. Seeking the support of a counsellor or therapist means we are prioritising our emotional and mental health in the same way that we consult a doctor when concerned about our physical health. It can alleviate distress, and prevent negative thoughts and feelings escalating to the point where they seriously impact on our ability to maintain relationships, jobs or live normal lives.
